Fly Fishing the Bay for Cobia with Zack Hoisington
7.00PM, 18 May, Zoom Captain Zack has been fishing in the mid-atlantic region for as long as he can remember. He grew up spending summers in Oriental, North Carolina where he learned how to catch fish, clean fish and shuck oysters on his own at a young age. As a child, the only books he would thoroughly read were about fish and he developed a lifelong dream of becoming a fishing guide. After receiving a Biology degree from Colorado College in 2012 this dream came true and Zack began guiding fly fishing trips near Aspen Colorado. Zack returned to his home waters back east in 2014 and worked at Horn Point Laboratory for 3 years, studying oysters and learning about the complex migration patterns on the Chesapeake Bay. During that time, Zack acquired a boat and began to fully immerse himself in the Chesapeake Bay fishery, chasing various species on fly and light tackle throughout the bay. Zack is currently a teacher at Gunston School where he teaches students about Marine Biology and continues to pursue a lifelong dedication to connecting people with the water. You can hook up with Zack at Chesapeake Coastal Charters or email him at: gofishwithzack@gmail.com. Zoom Link |

"A Brief History of Fly Fishing" w/ PPTU's Bob Dietz
7.00PM, 16 March, Zoom
Sometimes, looking back helps us to look forward. Having an understanding of techniques and materials used in the past can sometimes shed a little light on how and why we do what we do today in order to catch a fish. Looking back should also give us some comfort in knowing that people have been addicted to fly fishing for centuries. This month NCCTU is joining with PPTU for a presentation by PPTU member Bob Dietz, who will give us a brief history of the sport that is for most, a true passion.
As many know, Bob is an excellent tier and instructor, but he is also a history buff. Bob will discuss with us the development of the sport since the early 1800’s. He’ll discuss the development of rods and leaders over the years. He’ll cover how the dry fly and the nymph were developed and how the changing technology in fly rods helped to spur their growth. Bob will also touch on the colorful cast of characters that helped shape and grow the sport of fly fishing to its present state.

SHAD NIGHT 2022
7.30PM, 24 February, Zoom The January cold has been brutal this year. Think longer days; think springtime. Now is the time to get ready for another great shad run! NCC-TU Shad Night will return to the virtual world in four weeks. Please plan to join us on Thursday, February 24 at 7:30 for the next best thing to our traditional, in-person, gathering. Like last year, this webinar promises to be screen time well spent. Our featured guest will take us out of our Potomac comfort zone. Bill Gordon, a geologist based in Pennsylvania near the lower Delaware, will talk about his pursuit of shad up and down the Eastern seaboard. It’s time we appreciate the great range and adaptability of our favorite springtime spawner. Not to mention the adrenaline rush shad bring to fellow anglers from Florida to Maine. Bill is a special case. He's always on the move and has already fished for American shad on the St. Johns river this month! There will also be fly tying demonstrations from Ryan McCarron of Orvis Tysons and Rich Farino’s team at District Angling. A review of last year’s Potomac run will focus on the best stories from our NCC-TU Shad Reports. All of the participants will be available for questions via the chat box. Finally, our popular Silent Auction is making a comeback as a multi-day online event. Here’s your chance to grab a memorable guided fishing trip with a local expert, as well as an incredible range of brand-new Stackpole books. The auction will run until 11.59pm on Sunday 6 February. Virtual replaces venue, but it's still enjoyable. We hope you can join us! |
Everything but the Fish w/ Tim Romano
12 January 2022, 7pm We are thrilled to have fine arts and commercial photographerTim Romano join us for a talk about fly fishing photography. We think it's time to move beyond the grip and grin, and Tim has some great ideas and inspiration for is all. This hard-earned license to roam has led to assignments in Alaska, Chile, Argentina, New Zealand, Russia, Bahamas, Mexico, British Columbia, and extensively in the US. Tim is a weekly contributor to TU's "Thalweg Blog" on boating, ” He is also the managing editor of Angling Trade Magazine (the business publication for the Fly Fishing Industry) as well a Photo emeritus of the highly regarded publication The Fly Fish Journal. His artwork is part of the permanent collections at Lake Forest College, Photo Americas Portland, Instituto de Artes de Medellin, Colombia, and the University of Colorado, Boulder. Fly Fishing the DelMarVa Region and the Chesapeake Bay
7:00 PM, May 19th 2021, Zoom NCC-TU is joining with PPTU for an event that will feature local fly fishing figure Joe Bruce speaking about "Fly Fishing the DelMarVa Region and Chesapeake Bay." With warmer weather around the corner, this will be a timely topic as we prepare to give the local trout a rest! The Chesapeake Bay may not be first place you might picture in your mind for fly fishing, but it presents many great opportunities. About Joe: With over 50 years of fly fishing and tying experience, Joe admits he has "a pretty good understanding of fish and a better appreciation of the environment." Joe was the owner of The Fisherman's Edge fly shop in Catonsville, MD, for 15 years before he retired to spend more time fishing. Joe continues to write many books to help his fellow anglers tackle saltwater, snakeheads, fly tying techniques, chain pickerel - and more! Joe also invents and sells custom leader systems and bonefish, bass, saltwater, and shad flies in his spare time at his website (joebruce.net). Join us on line to hear Joe talk about summer fishing opportunities in the Bay and beyond. |
Smallmouth Night w/ Bob Clouser
7:00 PM, April 21st, Zoom
NCC-TU is extremely fortunate to join our partners at PP-TU for a presentation from fly fishing legend Bob Clouser on smallmouth bass fishing with the fly rod! For the new people, Bob Clouser is a huge personality in the fly fishing world: He invented and lent his name to the Clouser Minnow about 47 years ago, which has gone on to be one of the most popular bass and saltwater flies in existence and has reportedly caught more varieties of fish than any other fly. Not one to rest on his laurels, Bob went on to invent other great fly patterns like the Clouser Crayfish, the Clouser Swimming Nymph, Clouser's Sparkle Grubb, and many, many more.
Bob has written and produced numerous books, articles, and DVDs on fly tying, fly fishing, destination fisheries, and more. Before COVID, Bob toured fly fishing shows and other events giving fly tying classes, casting instruction, and various seminars.
He is the owner of Clouser's Fly Shop which is a full on line service now. (https://clousersflyshop.com)

Maryland's Wild Trout with Andrew Sarcinello
8PM, Wednesday, 21 October, Webex Join (digitally) NCC-TU and PP-TU for a night with NCC-TU Conservation Chair, Local Angler and Maryland Wild Trout Guidebook Author Andrew Sarcinello, learning about the wild trout streams of Maryland. Andrew spends much of his free time searching for wild and native trout streams in central Maryland. He will talk with us about the resources that are publicly available to help anglers locate wild trout streams and the tactics for fishing them. He will also discuss the status of Maryland's wild and native trout populations, particularly in the Patuxent River, and the challenges they face. Andrew's journey to learn about MD's wild trout gave him a deeper appreciation for native brook trout, wild brown trout and the delicate environments that sustain them. |
